About Our Specialists
Dr. Ulrich Hähnle (PhD, FCS Ortho, Wits; MD, Facharzt for Orthopädie, Berlin) is an orthopaedic surgeon, who specialised in spinal surgery. He was born in Germany and has lived in Johannesburg since 1992. He obtained his basic medical degree in Berlin and the larger part of his orthopaedic specialisation at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). His spinal expertise was developed during fellowships with Dr J. Craig, Dr L. Nainkin and Prof J. Harms (Langensteinbach/ Germany).
For the last six years his main focus has been in artificia spinal disc replacement. He developed, in conjunction with Dr Malan de Villiers and Dr Ian Weinberg, the Kineflex disc prosthesis. Around 60% of South African disc replacement operations are currently performed using the Kineflex prosthesis. The cervical and lumbar Kineflex disc is currently under investigation with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. Over the last few years Dr Hähnle has travelled to national and international spinal congresses to present on the early results and to instruct on the Kineflex disc.
Dr Ian Weinberg (MD, FCS (neuro)) is a neurosurgeon. Ian Weinberg graduated from the College of Medicine of South Africa with a fellowship in neurosurgery in 1986. He has been in private practice as a consultant neurosurgeon for 21years.
Dr Weinberg divides his time between cranial work and the full spectrum of spinal intervention. For the past ten years he has contributed the neurosurgical component to a neuro/spinal partnership with Dr Uli Hahnle.
Originating from this partnership has been the development of the Kineflex lumbar and cervical disc prostheses.
Ian Weinberg has also developed a wellness and performance-enhancing programme based on PNI (psychoneuroimmunology). The CPD-accredited programme is presented at workshops in clinical and corporate environments.
